Mindful in May

Can you believe it is May already? Here in Hobart it is feeling like Winter already and it can be really hard to stay positive and motivated when it is so cold outside! Something that we focussing on practicing this May is mindfulness. You may have heard this term a lot recently but what exactly does it mean?


What is Mindfulness?

According to Dr Russ Harris, psychologist and author of the Happiness Trap, mindfulness is about waking up, connecting with ourselves and appreciating the fullness of each moment of life. It is fully bringing you attention to the present moment with openness and no judgement. Have you ever noticed during a yoga class how you felt fully in your body, with have no thoughts or distractions from other things happening in your life but what posture you are doing that moment and how it feels? That is mindfulness!

Benefits of Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness is something that everyone can benefit from both physically and mentally. It can help you relax, reduce stress, bring perspective and balance to your life and help you appreciate the here and now. Many of the same benefits that you get from yoga!

How can I practice Mindfulness?

The best part about mindfulness is that it is easy and costs you nothing! Here are some ways that you can practice mindfulness:

  • Practicing yoga
  • Meditation
  • Pranayama (breathing exercises)
  • Going on a walk outside
  • Taking a break and having a cup of tea

There are plenty of ways to practice mindfulness. Why not try right now? Close your eyes and take 5-10 deep inhales and exhales, let your thoughts drift out of your mind and focus on what you are feeling right now with each breath. When you are finished open your eyes and congratulations, you have just practiced mindfulness! It wasn’t so hard was it?
